I'll be... the sitcoms got it right

How often have I sat and watched a sitcom, seeing problems arise just from lack of communication. Take Friends for instance. The amount of times a problem arises or a feud is created because somebody didn't just step up and say things exactly like they were. Mind boggling. And I've often wondered why the hell people in the shows don't just say "Hey... listen up.. this is how it is", instead of just standing there with a troubled expression upon their face.
Well, it seems, and I'm sure I've known this for some time inside my unconscious anyway, that this situation does in fact happen in real life. Even for me. I don't know what it is, but I've just felt under the weather mentally for some time. Peak physical condition as always, but... Just felt a lot of strain on my mind. And me saying yes to only evening shifts at the hotel for a month isn't helping. I'm not liking it one bit. I just enter a sort of funk, and I'm unable to drag myself out of it. My mind races, without ever pausing on one singular thought for more than a few nanoseconds. I only focus when directly approached. It's like a beginning depression.
Anyway, back to the problem. This lack of communication. I remember from when I was younger, how I had a hard time expressing how things were troubling me. I was doing this annoying thing, where I sort of expected whoever was my counterpart, to guess it or assume something was wrong, and ask about it. I thought I was over that, but it sprung open yesterday again. That old Pandora's Box. And I can't help but hate myself for it. If only I spoke out about things, in time... perhaps I wouldn't feel so bad the day after. Even tho the dispute was resolved, it was still.. argh. It's just another small black brick in the larger darkening wall of life. Why can't I just have what I want... I'm sure it'd make things a lot nicer. Blast it all.

Back in the good old days.. Way back. I'm talking 95-96.. When I used to live stateside North America, I was introduced to a lot of things. Among these droplets of gold, counting Dr. Pepper, PB and Js and Twizzlers, was Star Trek. Now, I had heard of the show before coming over, sure. But I hadn't in fact ever really seen it. I remember making fun of a guy in my school because he was into Star Trek at the time. Oddly enough, I hadn't ever seen it, nor did I really know what it was. All I knew was, people who were into it were counted as some of the geekiest people on planet earth.
So when I found out that the matriarch of the family I was going to live in in trusty old United Bluff was two tricorders short of a trekkie, I was a little worried. Little did I know, that the lurking geekness in me would soon be revealed. Because I did in fact realize that Star Trek is one helluva fine show. Sure, it's outdated (most of them), and the odd episode can be too damn corny. But overall it's just dandy.
So, over the years, I've made it a point to watch all of Star Trek.. all series, seasons and episodes. I've had Voyager around for quite some time, but never had the chance to watch it. Voyager was my host-mom's favorite Star Trek series, mainly due to the fact, I'd guess, that it had a female lead, as opposed to the largely popular Captain Jean-Luc Picard of The Next Generation fame. Captain Janeway wasn't liked by as many trekkies, because.. a woman as a captain? What will be next? But she gained popularity as the seasons progressed, and Voyager is regarded as a good a show as the rest, I'd dare say.
I've watched 6 episodes now, and I still like the show. I know, 6 ain't a whole lot. But it takes time getting into things, and since I do have 140 episodes give or take to go, I'd say easing in to it, is key. I watched TNG with an old roomie a few years back, but I guess I'll have to watch that again too. My agenda now, tho, is Voyager, DS9, Enterprise, TNG and then The Animated Series, a rare version of the original show, that was voiced, largely, by the original cast, but still fell out of canon because of some small technicality.
Yes, perhaps I'm a geek. But geek or no geek, Star Trek still carries a lot of punch. And it's a damned good ride, while you're on it. Two thumbs straight the hell up!

Ever run into a person you used to know (went to school with or work with) but haven't seen or spoken to in a long time? Just happened to me a moment ago (yes, I type this from work.. we've nothing to do, sue me). I had seen this guy once before here, but only sort of briefly and not a front view. But he reminded me of this one bloke I used to go to elementary school with.
So today, I'm standing in reception, and he passes me. So I say: "Hey, Kim... remember me?". He looks at me, utterly baffled. At least he doesn't cover up the fact that he doesn't remember me from my face alone. His eyes travel to my nametag, and then it dawns on him. Apparently he works in the garage (we've got in house parking), and has been for a few months. It's a good study job, he claims. We chat for a moment about nothing really. Just found it peculiar how you could run into people in places you'd never have figured you'd run into anybody familiar. He wasn't like my best friend back then, but we still hung out from time to time, and while he had changed quite a bit, I still recognized him fairly easily the second time around. In a funny way, it's a cool experience.
